Who can join StarJam?
StarJam is open to all young people with disabilities. There is no cost, and no special requirements to belong, only the desire and ability to have fun and to like being around others. Some Jammers have a particular interest in singing or dancing or playing a musical instrument. There are many types of roles in StarJam events, ranging from interviewers to guest-greeters. StarJam caters to the interest area of any young person.
What is StarJam all about?
StarJam creates opportunities for young people with disabilities, through a series of spectacular events. The young people go centre-stage, "jamming" and performing with celebrities of their choice. These events cause a transformation to occur, both in the young people who begin to relate to their abilities instead of their disabilities, and for the audiences who achieve a new respect, admiration and sense of humility as they experience the giving of the young people.
StarJam is ultimately about changing society's attitudes towards people with disability, and going about this with a philosophy of inspiration, fun and highly professional entertainment.
Jammers
How do you choose which Jammers participate in the shows?
We are always looking to include new Jammers while at the same time finding roles for the ones who have been involved since the beginning and who live and die for StarJam. Our doors are open to all and everyone who approaches us and wants to be a part of StarJam. We then ask the kids if they would like to perform in certain roles keeping in mind their natural talents, for example, we would invite someone keen on dancing to join in the dance classes to prepare to go on stage in the next performance. In choosing interviewers, we try to get a good balance of gender, ethnicity and representation of different disabilities.
What do young people say about StarJam?
Ese Aumelesulu, aged 15, has participated in all StarJam events so far. In his words: "I think “StarJam” is the best thing that could ever happen in a disabled child's life. It has surely been the best thing that ever happened to me. And it's events like these that make us disabled people know that we can be as normal as we want to be and that we can achieve anything that we want to”.
