Statement on StarJam’s Closure

It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of StarJam, following a resolution by the Board of Trustees to cease trading and begin the process of liquidating the StarJam Charitable Trust. All operations, including our beloved music, dance, and performance workshops, will end immediately, and employment for all staff will cease as of today.

For over 20 years, StarJam has been a place of joy, community, and confidence-building for young people with disabilities across New Zealand. Our free workshops and events have brought smiles, self-expression, and connection to thousands of Jammers and their whānau. However, despite our best efforts to reduce costs, diversify revenue, and seek additional funding, we have faced significant financial challenges. Rising operational expenses and limited funding options have made it impossible for us to continue our work.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our Jammers, their families, and our dedicated staff and volunteers. The memories and friendships created through StarJam will live on, as will the profound influence it has had on so many young lives.

The liquidation process will formally begin early next week when the Court is expected to appoint interim liquidators, likely Andrew McKay and George Bannerman of BDO. They will be responsible for managing the process, including addressing employee entitlements and other outstanding claims.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported StarJam over the years—our Jammers, their families, our generous donors, and our amazing volunteers and staff. Your dedication to our mission has been invaluable, and we are forever grateful.

For any questions or support, please contact us at info@starjam.org. Further updates will be available on this page as the process moves forward.

Thank you for being part of the StarJam journey.
